A Hidden World of Movement Behind a Minimal Box

Category: Home / Fitness

Location: Samutprakarn

Area: 300 Sq.m.

Year: 2022

I’M FLY STUDIO was developed from a challenging architectural brief—defined by strict setback regulations and limited openings. These constraints required precise planning of circulation, service zones, and spatial layout to minimize wasted space while still delivering an engaging and dynamic experience.

Because Yoga Fly is all about movement, energy, and playfulness, the space had to reflect that spirit—without compromising architectural discipline.

Why Renovate Instead of Rebuild?

It’s about the value of place.......

This project began with an existing house on a compact 200 sq.m. plot, with a requirement to integrate:

  • An Aerial Yoga Studio

  • A 2-bedroom residence

At first glance, it seemed almost impossible. But with the right design strategy, every constraint became an opportunity.

Planning

The core challenge was managing setback distances efficiently.

The solution:

  • Minimize openings where unnecessary

  • Allocate service areas (toilets, storage) in closed zones

  • Open views strategically where spatial quality matters most

  • Design circulation that is compact yet intuitive

Concept: “Circus in the Box”

Yoga Fly is expressive, acrobatic, and full of life.

We translated this into the idea of a “Circus in the Box.”

  • Exterior: A minimal, modern box—calm and restrained

  • Interior: A hidden world of performance, movement, and excitement

Subtle hints are revealed through façade textures and the southern stair volume—suggesting that something unexpected lies within.

Exterior Design

The exterior is intentionally quiet and minimal, acting as a container.

Textural details and the stair façade serve as visual clues—hinting at the energy inside without fully revealing it.

1st Floor | Arrival & Service Layer

  • Parking for 4 cars

  • Staircase positioned along the south side to maximize setback efficiency

  • Solid wall design helps reduce heat gain

The staircase becomes a sculptural element:

  • Cantilevered steps

  • Steel rods resembling “suspension ropes”

  • A lion-head sculptural light marks the beginning of the interior narrative

Kitchen / Relax Zone

A show kitchen designed as a small chef’s tableConnected to a piano / relaxation areaFlexible partitioning allows both open and private use

2nd Floor | Performance Space

The entrance begins with a vaulted waiting area, creating a transitional moment before entering the main space.

  • Patterned tiles + arched doors

  • Subtle Romanesque atmosphere

Inside, a 5.50-meter double volume space unfolds:

  • Functions as a “performance arena”

  • Playful wall design and arched openings

  • Flexible glass room for yoga, dance, and private classes

  • Dynamic lighting enhances movement and mood

Mezzanine | Social & Underground Atmosphere

A mezzanine level overlooks the main studio:

  • Designed as a social and relaxation space

  • Vaulted ceilings with tile and stone finishes

  • Creates an underground, immersive atmosphere

The highlight:A dramatic staircase connecting to the third floor—a visual moment often described as a “Stairway to Heaven.”

3rd Floor | Private Living Space

A calm contrast to the energy below:

  • Modern, minimal design

  • Grey-black palette with muted teal accents

  • Warmth introduced through teak wood flooring

  • Clean-lined furniture with dark wood textures

Construction Reality

Work-in-progress phases confirm that the concept translates seamlessly into built form:

  • Curved geometries

  • Material textures

  • Spatial planning aligned with the original vision

Key Takeaways for Multi-Level Yoga / Fitness Studios

  • Always verify setback, openings, and ventilation constraints first

  • Plan circulation and service zones efficiently to maximize usable space

  • The pre-class experience (waiting area) is as important as the studio itself

  • Movement-based spaces must consider:

    • Ceiling height

    • Structural support points

    • Anti-slip flooring

    • Comfortable, non-glare lighting
