The conservation of Thai elephants today faces significant challenges—from habitat loss and unsustainable tourism to a lack of public understanding about their ecological and cultural importance. Creating spaces that educate and inspire awareness is essential for supporting long-term conservation efforts.
The Samui Elephant Home Learning Center is an educational project located on Koh Samui, designed to promote elephant conservation and foster a deeper understanding of Thai elephants. The center aims to become part of a sustainable tourism experience, offering visitors of all ages from around the world an opportunity to learn about the role of elephants in both ecosystem and Thai cultural heritage.
Design Concept
The Collective Studio designed the Samui Elephant Home Learning Center as more than just a museum—it is an immersive learning environment.
The project is guided by the concept:“The Elephant’s Legacy: Traces of Time, Steps of Change”
This narrative allows visitors to experience the story of elephants through time, symbolically following their footprints from the past to the present.
The existing structure is a traditional Thai wooden building with an area of 128 square meters. The design enhances the architecture with natural, context-sensitive interventions, introducing materials such as perforated brick blocks to blend the building with its surroundings. These elements improve ventilation while creating layered light and shadow effects that enrich the spatial experience and reinforce a sense of place.
Spatial Journey
The visitor experience begins by following elephant footprints leading into a forest-like pathway, creating a sense of immersion and connection with nature.
Soft natural light filters through the entrance path, guiding visitors toward the reception area—the first point of engagement.
Here, information about Samui Elephant Home and the learning center’s concept is introduced in an open, welcoming space with natural tones that promote calmness and accessibility.
The journey continues through exhibitions that explore the evolution of elephants, from prehistoric origins to the present day, including various species found in Thailand.
The narrative also highlights the elephant’s historical role in Thai society—spanning warfare, transportation, trade, and tourism.
Exhibition content is presented through layered graphic boards, creating depth, visual rhythm, and emotional storytelling throughout the space.
The next zone of the exhibition explores the differences between Asian and African elephants, alongside the current issues affecting elephant populations today.
Visitors are guided through content that highlights the contrast between species, their habitats, and the challenges they face due to human impact and environmental change.
This section is designed to encourage active participation. Visitors are invited to respond to key questions and share their opinions on the issues presented. These reflections are collected as part of the exhibition experience, creating a layer of public engagement and dialogue within the learning center.
Impact
The Samui Elephant Home Learning Center is not only an educational space, but also a platform that promotes conservation awareness at a societal level.
The project supports sustainable tourism on Koh Samui, contributes to local employment opportunities, and serves as an example of how architecture and environmental storytelling can be seamlessly integrated.
More importantly, the content within the exhibition encourages visitors to understand the importance of elephant conservation and carry this awareness forward into real-world action and positive change.
We believe that a successful exhibition is not defined only by the information it presents, but by the experience it creates.
A well-designed space should immerse visitors within its narrative—allowing them to absorb its atmosphere, emotionally connect with its content, and carry those impressions beyond the visit.
