Designing a Contemporary Showroom as a Complete Sleep Solution Experience

Sleep is no longer simply about rest.
Today, quality sleep has become an essential part of physical and mental well-being, influencing productivity, lifestyle, and overall health.
With this understanding, The Collective Studio was commissioned to design the flagship showroom for Sleep Select — a new bedding brand backed by deep industry expertise — with the vision of creating a retail concept that could be expanded nationwide across department stores.
The challenge was not merely to design a mattress showroom, but to redefine what a modern sleep retail experience should be in an era where almost everything can be purchased online.
Beyond Product Display
Today’s showroom must offer something that digital platforms cannot:
Real experience. Real interaction. Real comfort.
Rather than functioning solely as a retail display, the showroom was envisioned as a curated experiential environment where customers could explore sleep solutions through physical interaction, atmosphere, and personalized consultation.

Spatial Planning & Customer Journey
The spatial layout was carefully designed to guide visitors through different layers of the sleep experience.
The front area introduces sleep-related gadgets and accessories before gradually transitioning toward bedding products and full-size mattress displays deeper within the showroom.
The mattress testing zone was intentionally placed in a more private corner of the space to create a greater sense of comfort and relaxation — acknowledging the often awkward feeling of trying mattresses in highly exposed retail environments.
At the center of the showroom, a circular consultation counter becomes the spatial focal point of the project. Inspired by the brand identity itself, the counter was developed as a functional sculptural element that allows 360-degree interaction while visually connecting to the illuminated brand wall behind it.
This area also serves as a consultation zone where sleep specialists can advise customers on sleep quality, ergonomics, and lifestyle-related sleep issues.

Designing Through Psychology & Experience
To subtly guide customer movement throughout the showroom, directional floor patterns were introduced as a psychological design tool.
These patterns naturally lead visitors deeper into the space while creating a sequential product discovery experience — borrowing principles from exhibition design and spatial psychology.
The overall atmosphere of the showroom was developed using the brand’s signature blue tones to evoke calmness and emotional balance, complemented by light oak wood, soft grey, and white finishes that add warmth and softness to the environment.
Curved forms and rounded geometries were incorporated throughout the interior to reinforce a sense of relaxation and comfort.
One of the playful focal elements appears above the consultation counter, where a mobile-inspired lighting installation references the form of a baby crib mobile — adding softness and emotional warmth without making the environment feel overly childish.

A New Role for the Modern Showroom
In today’s retail landscape, showrooms are no longer simply places to sell products.
They are spaces designed to create memorable experiences, build emotional connections with customers, and communicate the true identity of a brand in ways that online shopping cannot replicate.
Sleep Select was therefore designed not only as a mattress showroom, but as a complete “Sleep Experience Space” — where design, psychology, wellness, and retail converge into one cohesive environment.
