A Victorian Cottage Cafe Design

Many people may already know Tea Time’s The Charm from its charming country-style café in Chaengwattana, a destination beloved for its cozy atmosphere and photogenic interiors.

When the owner decided to expand the brand alongside the development of a new photo studio project, it became an exciting opportunity for The Collective Studio to create another café experience filled with storytelling and character.

Located within the upcoming Terra Dio the new branch began with an existing circular structure at the front of the site. With a limited budget, the design approach focused on maximizing the original architecture while transforming it into something distinctive and memorable.

Before starting the design process, we searched for a narrative that could tie every element together. After countless visits to tea houses and cafés across Bangkok—and probably too much caffeine from endless Afternoon Tea sessions—we finally found the story we wanted to tell.

We chose to reinterpret the spirit of Victorian England, the birthplace of Western tea culture, while connecting it back to the identity of the original café. But instead of simply recreating a classic English tea room, we introduced an additional layer of imagination through the concept of a “giant cottage in a tropical garden.”

Tea Times Concept

The exterior design combines the warmth of an English countryside cottage with tropical planting suited to Thailand’s climate, creating a whimsical atmosphere that feels both romantic and approachable. Landscape details by NEW TL Nature helped shape the garden experience while ensuring the plant selection remained practical and easy to maintain.

Inside, the café is divided into two main zones.

The right side serves as the primary entrance connected to the outdoor garden and restroom area, with the central counter linked directly to the kitchen and service spaces behind.

The left side is dedicated to seating, offering a variety of arrangements including communal tables, intimate corners, and built-in bench seating to accommodate different styles of visitors.

The interior atmosphere layers a rich mix of materials—wood, brick, steel, and patterned tiles—to create a rustic yet elegant character. Decorative partitions help organize the space while displaying curated objects and visual details throughout the café.

One of the highlights is a romantic hand-painted rose mural that softens the rustic textures and adds a subtle Victorian charm.

On the opposite side of the café, a surreal centerpiece emerges: a tree growing from the middle of the space with its leaves hanging upside down, creating an unexpected and playful visual moment.

The ceiling design alternates between smooth gypsum finishes and classic T-Bar ceiling details, while aged plaster textures and warm wood surfaces create depth and comfort throughout the interior.

Many of the spaces we design are not built from extravagant materials or unusual forms.

Often, they are made from familiar elements that already exist around us.

But the true essence of design lies in the story behind the space.

Once a place knows what it wants to communicate, the design naturally begins to take shape.

And we believe that when completed, the real atmosphere of this café will be even more magical than the perspective renderings themselves.
