Reviving a Hostel in Ratchathewi — Travelogue Hostel
Category : Hospitality
Design by : Collective Studio
Location : Bangkok ,Thailand
Travelogue Hostel is a hospitality design project located in Ratchathewi—one of Bangkok’s most vibrant areas for hostels and urban travelers.
The name Travelogue comes from a blend of “travel” and “log” (wood), while also playing on the word “travelogue,” meaning a traveler’s story. This dual meaning became the foundation of the design concept.
The client envisioned a loft-style atmosphere, but with a softer, more refined Japanese aesthetic. This led to the development of a Japanese Loft Style Hostel—combining raw materiality with calm, minimal spatial qualities.
Architecture & Facade Identity
The building was originally two old 3-story shophouses with a rooftop, which were merged into a single structure.
The façade design draws inspiration from the growth rings of a tree trunk—a direct reference to the word “log” in the brand name. This circular pattern creates a strong visual identity while also serving practical functions:
Acting as a sun-shading screen
Concealing air-conditioning systems
Adding depth and texture to the building envelope
From Old Structure to New Life
This project was a full renovation—transforming an aging commercial building into a lively, contemporary hostel.
More than just a redesign, it was about bringing the building back to life, creating a space that reflects the energy of modern travelers while preserving a sense of story and identity.
