Unfurling Seed: When Students are 'Seeds' Needing the Right Environment to Grow
The core concept of the project is "Unfurling Seed"—a metaphor that views "Medical Students" as valuable seeds growing into future quality medical professionals and human beings. We envision this space as the essential element that helps these seeds "gradually unfold" and thrive securely. The roles within the department are translated into this ecosystem as follows:
Ground: Represents the "Support Staff," acting as the solid foundation that cradles and supports every activity to ensure stability and strength.
Nutrients: Represent the "Medical Faculty," who provide knowledge, experience, and guidance to nourish the seeds' growth.
Unfolding: Represents the ultimate goal. When seeds are nurtured in the right environment, they grow into great trees that spread their branches to benefit society, aligning with the department's sustainable mission of caring for the "origin of human life."
This concept connects with the department's essence beyond specialized treatment, reflecting that becoming a quality human being starts from pregnancy, care, and birth—just as a plant seed requires the right environment to flourish.
Space of Birth: Translating the Internal Reproductive System into a Functional Layout
To ensure the concept becomes a real operational framework—not just a story—we developed Space of Birth, translating inspiration from the Internal Reproductive System into a clear, functional layout plan.
Foyer = Cervix The threshold and first point of contact—welcoming visitors and guiding them inward through a purposeful sequence.
Collaborative Space = Uterus The central, most generous zone—an incubator for co-working, idea exchange, and shared development where new outcomes can take shape.
Meeting Rooms & Studios = Ovaries Decision-making and production rooms—where academic output, key discussions, research direction, and strategic choices are formed.
Walkway = Fallopian Tubes A fluid connective circulation—supporting efficient movement between zones and keeping daily activities flowing without conflict.
This spatial metaphor creates a layout with a strong centre, intuitive connectivity, and a logic that supports both routine administration and a learning-driven workplace culture.
Design Solution: Integrating Wellness & Innovation for Sustainability
The design adheres to Healing Environment and Universal Design principles to ensure the well-being of all users:
Aesthetics of Curves Soft, rounded lines are applied throughout to reduce the rigidity of the existing structure and evoke gentleness, continuity, and the female form.
Colour Palette Salmon/Peach introduces warmth and vitality, balanced with greenery tones that signal growth and nature—layered with wood and earth tones to maintain calm professionalism.
Functionality & Privacy in an Open Plan An open-plan workplace encourages collaboration, while patterned glass and abstract graphics provide visual privacy and identity without isolating users.
The "Siriraj Obstetrics and Gynaecology Office Renovation" is, therefore, not just an office design, but the creation of a "Space for Life" ready to cultivate medical seeds to grow beautifully and completely, prepared to care for every life in society.
