PM 2.5, step aside! The 7-meter-tall air purifier is here to save the day!

In today's world, PM 2.5 has become a notorious villain, turning air quality into a major global issue. Naturally, air purifiers have become an essential appliance for homes, offices, and public spaces. Almost everyone owns one to ensure access to clean air—whether it's to protect our health from PM 2.5 or to create a fresh and breathable environment for daily life.
But did you know that a decade ago, there was a concept for a giant air purifier capable of producing clean air for an entire city?

Back in 2015, a decade ago, the Smog Free Tower—the world's largest air-purifying tower—was unveiled. This groundbreaking project was designed by Daan Roosegaarde, a Dutch artist and designer from Studio Roosegaarde.
The tower made its debut in Rotterdam, Netherlands, with funding from a Kickstarter campaign. More than just an artistic installation, the Smog Free Tower is an innovative solution that has made a real impact in reducing air pollution. By blending cutting-edge technology with artistic design, this project became a pioneering model for tackling urban pollution and has since inspired numerous environmental initiatives worldwide.

Standing 7 meters tall with its sleek and futuristic design, the Smog Free Tower can purify up to 30,000 cubic meters of air per hour using just 1,400 watts of power—equivalent to the energy used by a single kettle. It can capture tiny particles (PM2.5 and PM10), which are key contributors to health problems like respiratory issues and heart diseases.
"The Smog Free Tower creates a space of clean air in urban areas, allowing people to breathe fresh air at no cost," Roosegaarde said at the launch. In other words, you get to breathe clean air for free! (Looking at this, I’d say it’s definitely something we’d love to have in Thailand!)
An innovation and design masterpiece that seamlessly integrates with the environment.
The technology used in this tower is an ionization system, which works similarly to air purifiers in hospitals. It draws in polluted air from the top, captures fine dust particles using electrical charges, and releases clean air through ventilation openings around the tower. The result is the creation of a "bubble of clean air" in the surrounding area.

Another fascinating aspect is that the captured dust particles aren’t simply discarded. Instead, they are compressed into “Smog Free Jewelry”, including rings and cufflinks. Each piece of jewelry contains dust collected from more than 1,000 cubic meters of air. Not only does this add value, but it also serves as a symbol of hope, a reminder, and a long-term commitment to solving environmental issues.
PM 2.5 Issues and the Importance of Clean Air Today
Right now, the world continues to struggle with air pollution, especially PM 2.5, which has become a severe issue in major cities like Beijing, Paris, and Bangkok. During certain times of the year, PM 2.5 levels in Bangkok and Chiang Mai spike so high that these cities rank among the most polluted in the world.

Although Thailand is still finding ways to tackle this issue, the Smog Free Tower serves as an excellent example of how technology and design can be used to combat air pollution. Not only does it help purify the air, but it also inspires the development of urban clean-air spaces and even the transformation of pollution into something valuable.
If Thailand were to adopt this concept—such as by building air-purifying towers in major cities or promoting eco-friendly design initiatives—it could significantly improve both the quality of life and public health.
And what if Thailand explored new ways to tackle this issue by developing innovative products or solutions to help people better protect themselves from PM 2.5? What would that look like?
