The Collective was invited by Too Fast To Sleep to participate in the press conference for the “Creative Space Design Competition” at Too Fast To Sleep – Khlong Toei. The competition, organized under the concept “Vision to Action,” aims to create a creative learning hub for the community — a space that encourages knowledge-sharing and sustainable career opportunities.

The event was held at Metro Mall (MRT Khlong Toei) through a collaboration between Too Fast To Sleep, Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM), Bangkok Metro Networks Limited (BMN), and the Department of Interior Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University.

As part of the event, Kopchai Limpanataywin (Golf), representing The Collective Studio, joined as a guest speaker, competition juror, and alumni of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Architecture. He shared insights under the topic:

Team Strategy : Design To Win

Team Strategy : Design to Win

The session focused on how design competitions are not only about creativity, but also about strategy, teamwork, and understanding the real objectives behind the brief.

One of the key messages shared during the talk was the importance of setting clear goals from the beginning:

  • Why are we here?

  • What are we trying to achieve?

  • How can we transform the brief into a meaningful design strategy?

By aligning the team around a shared objective, designers can develop stronger concepts and create solutions that truly respond to the challenge.

Design Competitions Are Not Like Sports Competitions

Another important perspective discussed during the talk was that design competitions are fundamentally different from sports competitions.

In sports, the best performance usually determines the winner. But in design, being the most technically skilled does not always guarantee success.

Design competitions are evaluated through multiple dimensions, including:

  • Concept and storytelling

  • Functionality and user experience

  • Understanding of context

  • Environmental and social considerations

  • Feasibility and presentation strategy

This means every participant has an equal opportunity to succeed — not simply through talent alone, but through the ability to interpret the brief strategically, define a clear direction, and collaborate effectively as a team.

Creating Spaces That Generate Long-Term Impact

The “Vision to Action” initiative reflects a larger idea about the role of design in society: creating spaces that are not only visually appealing, but also meaningful and beneficial to communities.

For The Collective Studio, participating in this event was an opportunity to support and inspire the next generation of designers, while sharing real experiences from professional practice with architecture and interior architecture students.

The competition submissions were open until May 24, 2024, with the final five shortlisted teams announced on May 31, 2024.

Participants and interested audiences could follow the shortlisted projects and competition results through Too Fast To Sleep’s official online channels.
