Reviving the Glory of Lan Xang
Every project begins with a single moment—but sometimes, that moment leads to something much greater.
This spa design in Vientiane began from an earlier journey, when we traveled to Laos in search of inspiration for another project. What seemed like coincidence eventually became an opportunity, leading us to collaborate on the design of this spa.
The site itself was serene and full of character—a rectangular plot featuring a traditional raised wooden house, a lotus pond at its center, and a small pavilion set quietly to the side.
The atmosphere was calm, almost untouched, offering the perfect foundation for a meaningful design narrative.
The concept emerged unexpectedly. During that same trip, we came across a book titled “A Pictorial Journey on the Old Mekong”, illustrating the beauty of life along the Mekong River.
As we explored its pages, we were drawn into the rich cultural past of the Lan Xang Kingdom. This became the inspiration behind our design concept:
"The Folk Tale of Lanxang"
To translate this idea into architecture, we immersed ourselves in research—traveling to Luang Prabang, where the essence of Lan Xang heritage still lives through its temples and built environment.
These observations shaped our approach to spatial planning, architectural language, and material selection.
The masterplan was carefully developed to preserve the existing structure while introducing new functions.

The main building serves as the reception and primary service area, while treatment rooms are arranged around the lotus pond. Elevated walkways gently guide visitors across the water, creating a continuous and immersive journey, with service paths discreetly connected behind the scenes.

Architecturally, the project blends traditional Lan Xang elements with a contemporary spa atmosphere. The lotus pond becomes the heart of the design—connecting nature, space, and experience.

The entrance was reimagined to evoke a nostalgic marketplace, using bamboo, brick, and vintage-inspired elements to set the tone. The main building retains its original structure but is reinterpreted through simple interiors, where textiles and decorative objects act as storytelling elements.

Private treatment rooms feature floor seating and high ceilings, while the redesigned terrace offers a more open and breathable space overlooking the pond.
Additional structures were designed to enhance the experience. A new massage pavilion, elevated and separated by a courtyard, creates a sense of retreat.
Private treatment villas provide a more intimate setting, incorporating references from traditional motifs—such as patterns inspired by Wat Xieng Thong—while connecting seamlessly to outdoor bathing areas.
Even the smallest structure was thoughtfully transformed, turning an existing building into a naturally ventilated bathroom with a subtle sense of traditional character.
The final design was well received with minimal revisions—achieving a balance between vision and practicality within budget constraints.
Today, the project stands as a contemporary interpretation of Lan Xang heritage, ready to tell its story through space and experience.
Sometimes, coincidence leads to the most meaningful opportunities. And this project is one of them.
